The Queensland Government is in a caretaker period until after the state election. Minimal updates will be made to this site until after the election results are declared.
If you're a learner driver under 25 years old, you need to record at least 100 hours of supervised driving on Australian roads before you can take your practical driving test. At least 10 of these driving hours must be night hours between sunset and sunrise. You must record the details of each trip you take in a learner logbook.
Once you've completed your driving hours, you must submit your logbook to us for review—you won't be allowed to take your driving test until it's been approved.
If you're 25 or over you don't have to complete a logbook, but we recommend that you do. This will help you to make sure you have enough driving experience before you take your test.
Accepted learner logbook formats
You can use an app, a paper logbook or a combination of these to record your trips. If you are using more than 1 logbook, you only have to record each trip once.
If you start using a paper logbook and want to change to the logbook app, you can:
use the Change hoursfeature in the app and subtract the hours you've recorded in your logbook from 100 to get your new requirement OR
manually enter the trips from your paper logbook into the app and submit the app when you've met your requirement.
When you reach that total, you'll need to submit your logbook through the app and submit your paper logbook at Australia Post. We will start reviewing your trips once we've received both.
If you want to change from using the Queensland learner logbook app to a paper logbook, you can use the Change hoursfeature in the app's Profile screen to change the requirement to the number of hours you've logged in the app. After you've submitted your hours through the logbook app, you can use a paper logbook to finish your logbook requirement. Once you've reached your 100 hour total you can post your paper logbook to us. We will start reviewing your trips once we've received both your app submission and paper logbook.
Logbook requirements
Each trip you record in your logbook must include the following details:
date
start and finish times, and the total number of minutes spent driving
whether the trip happened during the day or at night
If you take a trip at night with a driver trainer, it can either be counted as triple time or night hours, not both. For example, if you take a trip with a driver trainer between 7 and 8pm, you can either choose for the trip to be counted as 3 hours of daytime driving or 1 hour of night driving.
Each trip you record must be signed or approved by your supervisor. Once you've met your requirements, you need to submit your logbook to be checked.
Make sure you submit your logbook at least 12 business days before your driving test. You can't take your test until we have approved your logbook.
You and your supervisor are responsible for the accuracy of your logbook. If you make a false or misleading logbook entry you may be fined and not be allowed to take your practical test until 6 weeks after your resubmitted logbook is approved.
Logbook exemptions
In some limited circumstances, you can apply for an exemption from the learner logbook requirements.
If you are granted an exemption, you will need to hold your learner licence for at least 2 years before you can take your driving test.
If you have taken supervised trips in another state or an eligible country while you held a Class C learner licence, you can apply to have some or all of the trips count towards your Queensland logbook requirements.
You can apply for up to 100 hours of trips taken in other Australian states or territories or New Zealand to be counted.
You can apply for up to 50 hours of trips taken in other eligible countries to be counted.
Do not record trips taken outside of Australia in your logbook.
Eligible countries
Trips taken in the following countries (not including their external territories) may be eligible to be counted towards your Queensland logbook requirements:
Country
Maximum credit available
Note
Australia (trips taken outside of Queensland)
100 hours
Trips in another Australian state or territory can also be added to your Queensland logbook instead of submitting a Prior Driving Experience Application.
an approved interstate or overseas learner logbook that contains the information required in the Queensland learner logbook
driver trainer receipts
documentation that contains the following details for each trip:
date
start and finish times
total number of minutes spent driving
start and finish locations
vehicle number plate
supervisor's name and contact details.
If your application is approved, you don't need to record the trips again. Use a Queensland learner logbook to record the rest of your trips taken in Australia.
Leaving Queensland
If you move to another state or country, you may be able use data from your logbook app or your paper logbook entries to meet their requirements. Check with the licence-issuing agency for details.
